Construction begins on the ECLUSE steam network in Waasland Port

From 2018 onwards it will transport the steam from two producers to six customers. The steam will travel through a five-kilometer network of pipes. As a result, the six customers will no longer use their own in-house steam boilers. When operational, ECLUSE will reduce emissions by 100 000 tons of CO2 per year. The Flemish Ministers for Energy and the Economy, Bart Tommelein and Philippe Muyters, were present as construction began on the ECLUSE network.

Indaver analyses the chemical and pharmaceutical waste from its industrial customers, right down to these molecules. The aim: to recover materials such as hydrochloric acid, iron oxide, iodine and a precious metal such as palladium.

Indaver has started preparations to set up a heat network between its waste-to-energy plant in Doel and a number of chemical and logistical companies in the vicinity of the Waasland Port. The project can count on €10 million in financial support from the Flemish Government.

Indaver has converted its static incinerator on the Antwerp site to MediPower® for the treatment of medical waste. The plant is commissioned in 2013. The Leuven plant, where medical waste was treated up to now, is closed down.

Merger with VLAR
Group
Merger with VLAR, which was founded by the Flemish government to provide a solution for household waste. After the merger the shares were divided as follows: The Flemish Environmental holding, 54.2%; 24 industrial shareholders owned 44.8%; and the Indaver personnel 1%.

The intermunicipal co-operation ‘Hooge Maey’, with Indaver's participation, takes over the landfill from the City of Antwerp.

Starting up activities in Doel

Indaver’s activities in Doel are starting to take shape. Grate incinerators 1 and 2 are commissioned and the Category 1 landfill is operational. Indaver also starts construction of the VEA (installation for pre-treatment of high calorific waste), which treats energy-rich, non-hazardous waste that is not fit for recycling. It is commissioned in 1998.

Indaver starts construction of the Environmental Park, Willebroek, Belgium, for the sorting and purification of packaged waste. In 1996 the PMD installation is commissioned as well as the glass-sorting installation and the composting installation.

The IVKA-installation in Doel is commissioned. The installation treats mercury-containing lamps and also contains an installation for mercury distillation.

The Static Kiln is commissioned

The Static Kiln in Antwerp is commissioned. The installation treats liquid chlorinated waste with the recovery of hydrochloric acid.

1989
First rotary kiln in Antwerp

The first rotary kiln for the treatment of hazardous waste is commissioned on Indaver’s Antwerp site. Indaver’s activities begin to take flight, as the second physicochemical plant for treatment of anorganic waste also becomes operational. Physicochemical plant number one was commissioned a year earlier, in 1988. By the end of 1989 Indaver has incinerated its first 1,000 tonnes of waste.


1985
Foundation of Indaver

Indaver nv is founded on October 24th 1985 by the Flemish government and 15 private companies to provide a solution for the waste of the chemical industry. Indaver’s first site is Antwerp, close to Antwerp Port, where its core customers have their activities. Two years later the landfill is commissioned and on October 5th 1987, Indaver receives its first delivery of waste to its Antwerp site.
